14th Annual Chili Cook-off A Huge Success

The 14th Annual Chili Cook-off sponsored by Winona National Bank on Saturday, February 16, raised $1785.96 in sales for Ready Set School. Additional donations for Ready Set School of $5773.25 were raised at the event, for a total of $7559.21. A large crowd enjoyed chili and entertainment by Minnesota Genbu-Kai Karate and the Cotter Show Choir. The WSU Men’s and Women’s Basketball players were also on hand to sign autographs.

Twelve businesses donated chili for the event. All of the chilies were judged by a celebrity panel of judges and by the public. The celebrity judges, which included Dr. Judith Ramaley of WSU, Coach Mike Leaf of WSU, Scott Wien of Wien’s Food Center, Dan Wies of Eastwood Bank, Fran Edstrom of the Winona Post and Steve Walker of Winona Radio, chose the following winners:

Spicy category

  • 1st place: Charlie’s D&D
  • 2nd place: Good Harvest Cafe
  • 3rd place: Erbert & Gerberts

Mild category

  • 1st place: Charlie’s D&D
  • 2nd place: Signatures Restaurant
  • 3rd place: Winona Rivertown Lions

The public voted Good Harvest Café the best overall chili.

Other restaurants that participated in the event were: Betty Jo Byoloski’s, Bub’s Brewing Co., Hy-Vee, Jefferson’s Pub and Grill, Kensington Café & Catering, and Wellington’s.

Ready Set School was created to ensure that all Winona County children have the basic and necessary school supplies to better succeed in school. Up to 1850 children in our county may come from families that lack the financial resources to provide supplies to their kids. Ready Set School is there to help those children.
